Faces Behind Our Success
Lisa Passerello, a graduate of UVM’s Field Naturalist Program, joined the VYCC in the summer of 2006 as an AmeriCorps VISTA and led two Wilderness Crews on the Appalachian Trail reroute project at Thundering Falls in Killington. She then moved into the headquarters office and played a key role in developing the Agriculture and Natural Resources Internship Program
that following academic year. After her VISTA service ended Lisa stayed on to continue working with our year-round School Programs by providing overall leadership, curriculum development, managing school relationships, and overseeing school crews on the ground. Lisa adds an insightful and positive perspective which is fueled by a deep passion for alternative education. In July she will be leaving the VYCC to pursue her teaching licensure through the Upper Valley Institute. Good luck Lisa, and thank you for all that you’ve done to build an incredible new program!

Crews in the Field
Start Up kicked off the first session of the summer on June 14th. Thirteen crews, led by 26 highly skilled and trained Crew Leaders, started with teambuilding activities, learning policies, and assembling the tools and gear they need to complete their projects at the Leadership, Education and Training Center before they were sent out to start their first projects together as crews all over the state. These leaders, from literally all over the globe, have spent nearly one month training and preparing for the summer field season. To learn more about the leaders of these crews visit the Crew Leader Profiles webpage. For pictures from the first session Start Up go to the Start Up Photos webpage.
If you would like to volunteer to lead teambuilding activities, drive a crew to their site, or contribute your cooking skills for the second session Start Up on July 26th, please contact Harry Frank at 434-3969 ext. 146 or hfrank@vycc.org. Crew of the Month – Montpelier Community Crew
The Montpelier Community Crew is spending the first two weeks of their seven week session at Food Works at Two Rivers Center in Montpelier this summer doing a variety of work. They will be planting trees, bushes and herbaceous plants along the riverbank to help control erosion. The crew will also be constructing raised bed container herb gardens, removing brush and undergrowth in the outdoor teaching kitchen, and participating in garden maintenance and upkeep on the Earth Garden and Herb Garden. The crew will be getting their hands in the dirt and helping to plant, weed, compost, and participate in many other farm chores around the Center. They will also have the opportunity to work with an experienced team of timber framers in restoring the first floor of the historic barn there, originally built in 1836!
To learn more about the crew’s work at Food Works at Two Rivers Center, join us for the Montpelier Community Crew's Open House Presentation on August 13th.
Catamount Trail Association in the Running for National Grant
Out of nearly 100 submissions from non-profits throughout the United States, the Catamount Trail Association (CTA) has been selected as one of the top five organizations to share in Redwood Creek’s commitment to preserve, protect, and provide access to the great outdoors. The general public will be urged to cast their votes for one of these non-profit organizations. At the end of the competition the non-profit with the most votes will be granted $50,000 and the runner-up $10,000. The voting can be done by going to the Redwood Creek Great Outdoor Project website where you can place your vote for the Catamount Trail Association. Please vote and encourage other to do the same.
The VYCC has partnered with the CTA on many projects over the years and would be delighted to see them win this award. From constructing bridges in Stowe and Somerset to maintaining and relocating miles of trail, the VYCC has worked on numerous CTA projects since 1995. Please show your support by voting for them in this contest. It will make a difference for the future of the CTA and potential projects for the VYCC!

School Crews Graduation
After a full year together for both the Mount Mansfield Union and Lamoille Union school crews, and a semester for the Center for Technology crew, the students successfully completed their program and “graduated”! In June the three School Program Crews each made a final presentation to groups of family, friends, school officials, and VYCC staff about their year in the program. The Lamoille Union High School Crew made a video to capture their experience, the Mount Mansfield Union High School Crew cooked a great meal for their crowd, and the Center for Technology – Essex Crew harvested food from the VYCC garden to share with their presentation’s attendees. Congratulations to all of the young men and women that participated in the School Program this year!
