Faces Behind Our Success

We are grateful to Bolton Valley Resort, owned by Redstone, for their generous sponsorship of Denim and Diamonds 2008! In addition to helping underwrite our programs for youth and the environment through their support of Denim and Diamonds, they will also be acting as a project sponsor for our school crews this fall as they work on Bolton’s extensive network of Nordic trails while earning credit through our VermontFutures program. Thank you to Redstone and Bolton Valley Resort for helping to provide life-changing opportunities for Vermont youth!

Denim and Diamonds 2008

There are only two more weeks before Chittenden County’s most fabulous fundraiser on September 13th! Buy your tickets now online to reserve your seats for Denim and Diamonds 2008 before they sell out.

The night will feature a great seated dinner by Dish Catering, music and dancing to the sounds of Red Hot Juba, and a night of gambling on the tented back deck and inside the hay mow. With a very special surprise for all of the guests, this is definitely an event you don’t want to miss!

Any questions? Call Kate Villa at (802) 434-3969 ext. 110 or kate@vycc.org. Hope to see you there!

Alumni Rendezvous

Alumni Rendezvous

Save the date! Join us for the 2008 Alumni Rendezvous at the West Monitor Barn on Sunday, October 12th for a day to reconnect with the VYCC! In the past there has been pumpkin carving, cider making, live music, and service projects on the West Monitor Barn property to do that day. If you’d like to be involved with planning this year’s event, contact Alumni Relations AmeriCorps VISTA Cara Butterly at (802) 434 – 3969 ext. 144 or cbutterly@vycc.org. We hope to see you all there!

Crew of the Month – Roving 8

Crew of the Month – Roving 8

“We’re Roving 8 and we’re OK, we sleep all night and we work all day!” sang Roving 8 during their closure presentation at the West Monitor Barn. Roving 8, part of the Learn, Earn, and Prosper Program, was VYCC’s first integrated crew made up of youth with and without visual impairments. This crew spent a week completing trail maintenance on the Sensory Trail at the Green Mountain Audubon Nature Center in Huntington, where they also replaced approximately 100 cedar posts along the trail, and re-threaded guide rope through them. This trail is unique since it is designed and intended to be used by those with visual impairments. After their work in Huntington the crew moved to the VYCC property and worked on constructing a composting toilet near the lean-tos, and made some critical improvements to the VYCC’s trail system.

Second Session Closure

Our summer field season ended on August 17th with 12 crews returning to the Leadership, Education & Training Center at the West Monitor Barn to hand in their green shirts and say goodbye to the VYCC for the summer. Each crew gave a presentation to an audience of parents, headquarters staff, Corps Members and Crew Leaders from 2008. To see pictures from closure and the 2008 field season follow this link. Thank you all for such amazing work this summer!
