Faces Behind Our Success

Don Bicknell is a retired Waterbury senior who just finished his tenth year of volunteer work for the VYCC. Imagine, ten years of volunteering for the VYCC! Don is truly invaluable to the organization. He takes on projects that enable numerous outreach and communications efforts. He volunteers whenever asked and is known for staying until the job is done! Don is our Volunteer Extraordinaire and even has a room in the West Monitor Barn named after him. Last fall, Don won the United Way Hometown Hero of the month award (pictured above). Thank you Don for all of your time and efforts!

Barn Volunteers Needed - January 24th

Barn Volunteers Needed - January 24th

Come help the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps restore the iconic East Monitor Barn to its former glory. The barn and the surrounding land serve as reminders of Vermont’s agrarian traditions and are sources of great pride for the VYCC. The VYCC recently purchased the East Monitor Barn, four outbuildings, and accompanying 160 acres. We are now in the beginning stages of revitalizing the site and returning it to active use as a part of the VYCC’s Leadership and Education Training Center.

Join us on January 24 from 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Please bring appropriate clothing and work gloves. Hot beverages will be provided. RSVP to keegan@vycc.org or 434-3969 x 141.

School Crew Presentations - A Huge Success

School Crew Presentations - A Huge Success

On the evenings of January 14th and 15th, students from the VYCC's CTE and CVU crews gave presentations at the White Farmhouse located on the Monitor Barn Property in Richmond.

Students shared stories about recent projects, including: building check dams, girdling trees, cleaning up the East Monitor Barn, and building a greenhouse. They also touched upon the different types of wildlife they have come in contact with throughout their adventures.

Job well done!  To find out more about our School Programs and School Crew Leaders, click here.

Update From a 2007 Crew Leader

Update From a 2007 Crew Leader

"Since my season as a Crew Leader (2007), I have had some awesome adventures! First, I traveled to Mombasa, Kenya to work as an intern for a local, grass roots non-profit called Eco-Ethics. I learned about sustainable development in Eastern Africa, how nonprofits work in developing countries, and helped to build a sustainable, alternative income enterprise for a coastal women's group.

Travelling abroad was really exciting, and it was very interesting to learn about how people are working for conservation in a totally different culture and environment. Now I am in Portland, Oregon studying environmental law.

I'm in my first semester right now and it is really hard, but I am motivated by my passion to do great things for the planet and people once I get my degree! I hope to someday work in international policy regarding natural resource management and environmental conservation. I was a Corps Member in 2001 and 2003 and I know without a doubt that those experiences are a big part of why I am in the environmental field today. Thanks VYCC!!"
