Leadership Development Crews

This summer the VYCC will be piloting a new Leadership Development Crew. This crew will be smaller than typical VYCC crews, and will run for eight weeks during the summer in a residential setting similar to Roving Crews. The crew experience is designed to empower Corps Members to discover their own leadership style and work to develop it with their crew during the summer. This crew will also have the opportunity to work on more technical projects, most of which will include extensive trail work. Alumni seeking a different type of VYCC experience are encouraged to apply. The VYCC is seeking both Corps Members and Crew Leaders for these crews so apply now!

For more information visit the Leadership Development Crews webpage or contact Program Coordinator Justin Kenney at jkenney@vycc.org or (802) 434 – 3969 ext. 140.

Crew Leader Hiring 2008

MMU Crew Completes Barn Inventory

MMU Crew Completes Barn Inventory

In December the Mount Mansfield Union High School Crew completed an  interesting and unique curriculum unit sponsored by the Department of Historic Preservation. This three week mapping project, to inventory all the barns in Richmond, introduced the interns to Geographic Position Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The crew used the technology to create maps as well as a website to display them. In total, the website includes ten GIS maps that locate the barns in Richmond as well as different natural features of the region. Visit the website the crew created to see all of the details or check out the full article about this project in the News section of the website.

If you are interested in the mapping project or in projects that involve the VYCC property contact Land Stewardship Specialist Bradley Materick at bmaterick@vycc.org or (802) 434 – 3969 ext. 149.

Hold Your Wedding or Event at the West Monitor Barn

Hold Your Wedding or Event at the West Monitor Barn

The West Monitor Barn, located in Richmond, is capable of hosting meetings, weddings, conferences, events, celebrations, civil unions and anniversaries. The Haymow can seat up to two hundred people and there are conference rooms for smaller gatherings. Regardless of the space you choose, you will be surrounded by historical Vermont elegance.

An event at the West Monitor Barn is an event with a twist - all proceeds go to fund the VYCC’s programs helping to train the next generation of leaders.

For more information contact Kristen Kozik at kkozik@vycc.org or (802) 434 – 3969 ext. 113 or visit the West Monitor Barn website. Tours are welcome any time!

Quote of the Month

The VYCC was an eye opener to me. It made me realize how much I really could give back.” – Amanda Duffy, Roving Corps Member 2006 and 2007

Faces Behind Our Success

Faces Behind Our Success

Krista Washburn, Editor in Chief of Vermont Vows, is an invaluable part of the VYCC’s successful events! In addition to serving as design and creative guru for the VYCC’s annual Denim & Diamonds benefit, she generously donates space at The Wedding Affair and in Vermont Vows to help promote the West Monitor Barn as an event destination. She has been part of developing marketing and event strategy for the Barn since day one, and we are so grateful for all of her creative genius, energy and commitment – which has been tremendous!

Thank you Krista for all you do for the VYCC!

Crew of the Month

Center for Technology – Essex School Crew

Instructor: Erin Seward
Interns: Steven Kendall and Isaac Moon

The CTE Crew has been working on independent projects for the past two weeks that will greatly benefit the VYCC. Intern Steven Kendall has been using GPS to map certain features on the property such as apple trees, power lines, and red pine stands. His work will be used to help in the creation of a detailed map of the 230 acres surrounding the  West Monitor Barn. Intern Isaac Moon chose to create a new recruitment flyer for the school program as he has a passion for graphic design. The new flyer will soon be seen in the halls of CTE and other schools around the area. Great work!

For more information about our school crews contact School Programs Manager Lisa Passerello at lpasserello@vycc.org or (802) 434 - 3969 ext. 143.
